Part of the Sermon series, preached at a Sunday Morning service

« I Owed A Debt None All Spiritual Blessings »

What does it mean to be a father? Being a father means there is another person very much like me who is also very dependent on me.

God is our Heavenly Father. Here are some qualities of God the Father to emulate.

Psalm 103:3 – forgiveness
v. 4 – to save from harm
v. 5 – to praise good things
v. 6 – to be a judge
v. 7 – speak about our history
v. 8 – merciful and gracious
v. 13 – compassion

Are there Biblical examples for us to follow? They seem few, but are we looking for perfect fathers? Is any human father a perfect father? Here are some examples we can learn from.

Adam – taught his sons to worship God
Noah – took his sons with him
Abraham – ordered his son after him
Isaac – sought after God
Manoah – taught his son of God
Job – spiritual care for his children
David – love for his son
Solomon – burden for his son
Jonadab – ancestral legacy

What was their secret? They were looking for a heavenly country. People were more important than things.
The calling of a father is to lay down his life for the family. He needs to value his children for who they are. He needs to see what he can contribute to the relationship more than what he can get out of it. Fathers have a strong influence on the values their children will have later in life. Our children are our most valuable gift.

Colossians 4:6 – Let your speech be always with salt (prudence) that ye may know how to answer every son or daughter.
